Archive note: The Fall of Demetria, occurring in the solar year 2450, is widely regarded by Imperial scholars and military analysts to be the single greatest disaster suffered by the Imperium as a result of insurrection, rather than hostile incursion. The disorder cascading as a result of the collapse of the Demetria Sector Administration would necessitate the deployment of entire legions to bring under control, with unrest spreading to nearby sectors as news of the rebellion spread. The final death toll to Imperial forces is estimated to be within the hundreds of thousands; this, however, is largely considered to be a conservative propaganda estimate, with the true casualty list considered to be in the order of millions. What is definitive however is the loss of The Indomitable of the Desolator class, a horrific toll, with this loss exacerbated by the fact the vessel was lost without a single hostile ship involved. Whilst it's impossible to ascertain the facts for certain, the accepted theory posits that a mass mutiny resulted in conflict aboard the vessel, escalating to the point of a critical fusion event within the engineering sector, and ultimately resulting in the total destruction of the ship.
Archive note: The point at which the Demetria rebellion began is considered by those in the intelligence community to be 2448, following the enacting of the Proscription Laws, an attempt to crack down on sympathies within the upper classes for the [redacted]. Whilst nominally effective at this objective, the Proscriptions ultimately led to even greater unrest among other classes, and the founding, and funding, of a number of insurrection groups. This however would not be enough of a concern on its own to topple an entire sector, which for some time created numerous conspiracy theories as to what other factors influenced the disaster. Later recovery and examination of administration documents, complimented by the interrogation of survivors and prisoners alike, yielded a much more expansive understanding of the event. Infighting between 'Civilian' administrators, often arguing over matters of economics and profit delayed any substantial response to the insurrection, only taking action at far too late an hour to prevent the disaster.
Archive note: By the time that the order was given for regional garrisons to take decisive action against insurrectionist forces, it is known that a number of key installations had already been overrun and destroyed, not least of which the Azovistal Mountain Deep Range Transmitter, the planet's chief means of communication with nearby sectors and further afield. Furthermore, the loss of the Gavordia Garrison Armoury led directly to a series of catastrophic military defeats, owing primarily to a lack of military intelligence. Planetary Guard commanders led Imperial forces into defeat after defeat, expecting a disgruntled mob, but finding themselves beset by a well armed, and devoted, insurrectionist force. It would only become known after the defeat of insurrectionist forces on the planet that the rebellion was bolstered by a number of veterans of prestigious Imperial military forces, including elements of the Military Police. These individuals were later struck from the rolls of the Imperial Military by Administrative decree.
